Ring Sizing…

Over the years we have noticed several things, about ring sizing there are some thing that you might like to take into consideration before you go have your ring sized.

What you had to had to eat during the day or the night before can affect the finger size. If you have had foods containing  high amounts of salt the night before, your finger may be swollen.

Try not to come in, in the morning before your fingers have a chance to get to their normal size, morning is not the best time to get your finger sized. If you have eaten salty foods for lunch try to wait until the next day to get your ring sized. Women that are pregnant might have swelling during their pregnancy’s, we try not to size rings during this time because after they give birth they will have to size them back down. It is not recommended to keep sizing rings up, and down. Every day your finger could be a different size, we recommend waiting for about a month before you decide this, we have found that after about a month you can get a good sign if they are just swollen in the morning, or if they do need to be sized.

Some medications that you may be taking could be the cause for swelling. If the medication is a temporary thing then do not size your rings, after you stop taking it the swelling should go down.

Rings that have 3 or more bands, like the trio diamond engagement ring sets, that are so popular these day’s may need each one to have a different size. What I mean by this is if the bands are wide, and your have 3 of them the last band that you put on may be closer to the knuckle.

Sizing your finger; when you have your finger sized at a jewelry store, do not tighten your finger, make your finger as relaxed as possible.  When you tighten your finger, your flex the muscles in the finger and this could make the finger smaller not giving an exact sizing. You should have a little pull over the knuckle, if the sizar slips right over the knuckle this size is too big for you. People with large knuckles may find that you may need a bigger size to go over the knuckle, but then have a ring that will be twisting on your finger. This can be fixed by having your jeweler put a couple of gold balls on the inside of the shank.

If you have a lot of gold jewelry that you may have bought when the price of gold was lower, this would be a good time to get your jewelry appraised. Lets say you bought your gold when the price per once was $600.00, today the price per once is $1,108.00 an once. That is a huge price jump, and many of us forget that about the gold jewelry that we have in our jewelry box. You should have all your jewelry appraised not just the gem stone jewelry. Lets say you appraised your gold at the old price, and that gold jewelery was stolen you would only get the old price, (the price that gold was at when your appraisal was written). In this area we have so many people who by high karat gold jewelery, and many do not even think about having their gold appraised, and added to their home owners insurance, do not make this mistake.

Ask if they are buying by gram or dwt..

Always make sure when you are calling, and asking different stores how much they are buying the gold for you ask if they take it by penny weight (dwt) or gram weight. It does make a difference make sure to do your calculations before you take it in.

An example is $13.00 per gram what we are taking 14kt for today would be about 20.00 by dwt. So if you are calling around for prices, and they tell you $17.00 ask if that is by gram or penny weight? if they say gram you have hit the jack pot, and go sell your 14kt to them, but if they say that is the price for penny weight, they are a little low. Different parts of the country are taking the gold at different prices. One woman who called from Florida said the most she could get for her 14kt gold was $8.00 a gram. We take our 10kt gold for that price, so it does make a difference what part of the country we are talking about. I only bring this up because someone called last week, and wanted to know how much we buy 14kt gold for I told them it was $13.00 a gram. He said no thank you I am already getting $16.00 I told them that is good, but are they buying by penny weight, or gram weight? They did not know, and said they would call back, as it turned out it was by penny weight, and they did their calculations,and found they would be getting more from us.
