The Meaning of Wedding Bands, and Engagement Rings…
When you are giving and accepting an engagement ring, or a wedding band do you know the meaning, and history behind this beautiful jewelery? Wedding bands, and engagement rings are much more then just jewelry that you are wearing you are giving, and wearing a symbol of emotions, and promises to each other for a life long commitment.
They are symbols of several emotions such as:
Love
Commitment
Fidelity
Eternity
Honor
So who started the tradition of a wedding band? The Egyptians, but they did not start by putting gold or other metal on your hand ladies in Ancient times you could have had a plant sections on your ring finger. Why this finger will it was thought in those times that the fourth finger (the finger we now call the ring finger) has a vein that was connected directly to the heart, so that is how this finger became the official finger for the wedding band.
The Middle Eastern men put a little twist on the wedding ring by making puzzle rings for their wives to wear. These rings fall apart when you take them off and have to be put back together in order for you to put them back on. So why did these become so useful to the Middle Eastern men well when the husband would travel he would be able to tell which of his wives had been cheating on him, because the ring had to be put together again. If you did not have the skill to do this you could not put your collapsed ring back on your finger.
The Romans used these symbols of love as symbols of ownership the Roman man would claim their woman with the ring. The same can be said for how the Romans used the engagement ring, some of the engagement rings had keys carved on them. Why keys well what better way to tell a women that she if she married him she would have the key to his wealth, that is what they say any way. The engagement ring as we know it today with gems, and diamonds did not become popular before the fourteenth century when only the royals could afford to do this, but they started to exchange and wear these engagement rings.
A ring is a circle that has no breaks it is never ending it is eternal forever. That is why the ring was the symbol for marriage never ending, un-dieing, forever the way your love for each other is.
The next time you look at your ring finger remember all that goes into the little piece of gold that you are wearing, and before you put that engagement ring on your finger make sure you know what it means to wear it. Remember it means a lot more then just how big the stone is or how much it cost it means so much more.
